This page describes policies for pages in the Cookbook. It is a "living document" so it will change over time to reflect the standards created by Cookbook contributors.
Recipe Formatting
[തിരുത്തുക]Recipes should be formatted according to the recipe template.
Pages needing work
[തിരുത്തുക]Pages which need work should be tagged with the {{cookwork}} template, and will appear in Category:Cookbook pages needing work. When a recipe has been sufficiently improved, the template should be removed.
Naming Conventions
[തിരുത്തുക]Cookbook Pages
[തിരുത്തുക]Case
[തിരുത്തുക]The de-facto naming convention for Cookbook pages is title case.
Name
[തിരുത്തുക]Recipes should be named according to their traditional name, their origin, or their ingredients. Avoid naming recipes for people, unless it is a well-known recipe by that name.
Recipes with a non-English name that have a common English name should be named with their common English name. For example, the primary name for Cookbook:Khaeng Keaw Wan should be Cookbook:Thai Green Curry. If necessary or desired a redirect from the name in the original language can be created. In cases where the non-English name is the common name, that name should be used, as in Cookbook:Huevos Rancheros.
Recipes names with special characters (diacritics, etc) should be primarily spelled with simple ASCII characters and a redirect should be created with the special characters included.
Special Diets
[തിരുത്തുക]Recipes for a special diet which are substantially adjusted variations of a normal recipe should be denoted by the diet name in parentheses after the name of the recipe. A vegan variation of Cookbook:Chili would be Cookbook:Chili (Vegan); a gluten-free variation of Cookbook:Brownie would be Cookbook:Brownies (Gluten-Free); a lactose-free variation of Cookbook:Milkshake would be Cookbook:Milkshake (Lactose-Free). Recipes which adhere to a special diet, but are not variations for that specific diet should not be named in this fashion; instead only the appropriate category should be added. Trivial variations should be listed on the recipe page itself.
Duplicate Recipes and Disambiguation Pages
[തിരുത്തുക]When there is more than one recipe for a single type of food, there are several ways to resolve the situation:
- If one recipe is of poor quality, delete it.
- If one recipe can be expressed as a variation upon the other, include it in the variations section and delete the original.
- If the recipes can be merged into a single recipe, merge them and delete the originals.
- Create a disambiguation page for the 'abstract' type of food (using the {{cookdp}} template as a header) and give each recipe a unique name.
In the last case, the distinguishing name should be as descriptive of the unique qualities of the recipe as possible. For example, a disambiguation page is Cookbook:Lasagne which links to Cookbook:Traditional Lasagne, Cookbook:Ricotta Lasagne, and Cookbook:Lasagne with bean sauce. If there is not an appropriately descriptive way to distinguish the recipes, roman numerals should be used, as in Cookbook:Hummus I.
Cookbook Categories
[തിരുത്തുക]Cookbook-related categories are not entirely standardized, but these generally seem to be in the "normal" wikipedia form of capitalized first letter, lowercased first letter elsewhere (except with proper nouns).
For recipe categorization by ingredient, origin, diet, meal type, and recipe type classifications there is a tendency to use the "___ recipes" format e.g.:
- Category:Egg recipes (by ingredient)
- Category:Italian recipes (by origin)
- Category:Vegan recipes (by diet)
- Category:Cake recipes (by recipe type)
- Category:Dessert recipes (by meal type)
For ingredient categorization, a plural form is generally used, e.g.:
Featured Recipe and Ingredient
[തിരുത്തുക]The featured recipe and ingredient should be chosen to highlight the potential of the Cookbook. They should therefore be well written and wikified. In addition, the featured recipe should:
- have a picture of the finished recipe (if possible)
- follow the recipe template
- have a recipe summary (see template above)
- have proper categories (by ingredient, diet, region, etc as appropriate)
- be an entire food item (i.e. not a component as in pie crust, sauces)
The featured ingredient should:
- have a picture of the ingredient
- have proper categories (by ingredient, diet, region, etc as appropriate)
The featured recipe and ingredient should be updated as frequently as once per week.
Selection
[തിരുത്തുക]Cookbook contributors and users should tag worthy modules with Category:Featured recipe candidate or Category:Featured ingredient candidate.
Procedure
[തിരുത്തുക]- Edit Template:Featured recipe or Template:Featured ingredient.

Usage notes
[തിരുത്തുക]- {{Recipesummary}}:
- All fields are optional, see Template:Recipe summary/doc#Examples for examples on using this template.
- The "Category" tries to resolve to an actual category, but does not include the recipe in that category.
- Rating is between 1 and 5 inclusive.
- {{nutritionsummary}} is shorthand for {{Nutrition Summary}}. Its arguments are in the order they are displayed.
- {{Seasonality}}:
- The numbers entered are 1,2 or 3 for each month. 1 means the ingredient is not in season, 2 means the ingredient is not at it´s best, but is grown by natural means and 3 means the ingredient is in season. These values are entered for the northern hemisphere. The values for the southern hemisphere are automatically rotated 6 months.
- Should preferably be accomplished by a small paragraph explaining the details of the seasonality of the ingredient. The page should also:
- be tagged with one or more of Category:Spring ingredients, Category:Summer ingredients, Category:Autumn ingredients, Category:Winter ingredients or Category:Ingredients available all year.
- be added to the tables on the seasonality page.
- {{SeasonalitySpec}} is used to enter the values for the southern hemisphere manually. The template has 24 number fields one per month per hemisphere, from Jan to Dec, northern hemisphere first.
